Team Idea
Small teams building social-impact software (health, disaster-alert, assistive tech) rarely check if their code infringes existing patents, since a proper legal clearance costs thousands of dollars and takes weeks — resources they don't have. They only discover the risk after a legal threat arrives, sometimes forcing the project to shut down. At the same time, when these teams build something genuinely novel, they have no affordable way to protect it, since filing a patent also requires a lawyer. Today, patent awareness is invisible at the one point it matters most: while the code is being written and reviewed. There is no lightweight, developer-facing tool that surfaces patent risk signals and helps teams protect their own innovations, as part of the normal code review and release workflow — leaving underfunded, mission-driven developers exposed on both sides of the IP problem.
