In modern continuous delivery pipelines, database schema migrations (such as table renames, column drops, or field splits) represent one of the most hazardous friction points for engineering teams. When a migration is deployed, legacy application instances running in production frequently crash with runtime SQL errors (e.g., "no such column: name") before their code can be updated. Traditional approaches rely on slow staging databases, manual schema reviews, or post-incident rollbacks that risk service outages and data loss. Bifrost Sentinel is an autonomous, developer-first safety CLI built entirely within IBM Bob 2.0 that prevents breaking database changes before they hit production. It executes a comprehensive, five-stage zero-downtime release workflow: 1. Pre-flight Static Risk Scan (analyzer.py): Scans incoming DDL migrations using AST and regex rules to detect destructive patterns (DROP COLUMN, TABLE RENAME, NOT NULL WITHOUT DEFAULT, and ADD CONSTRAINT), mapping each finding to MITRE CWE security taxonomies. 2. Codebase Query Harvesting (harvester.py): Automatically inspects application source files (.py, .sql) across the repository to discover every active query referencing database entities. 3. Isolated In-Memory Rehearsal (rehearsal.py): Replays the migration inside an isolated, in-memory SQLite sandbox against the harvested queries, proving runtime regressions without requiring physical test databases. 4. Dynamic Compatibility Healer (healer.py & explainer.py): Automatically calculates schema diffs and synthesizes zero-cost backward-compatible SQL views (e.g., aliasing (first_name || ' ' || last_name) AS name) over renamed physical tables (users_v2). It restores legacy query execution with zero data loss and exports an executable production patch (bifrost_remediation.sql). 5. Enterprise Reporting & CI/CD (ui.py & reporter.py): Computes an automated Migration Safety Score (0–100), outputs native SARIF v2.1.0 for GitHub Code Scanning, generates structured JSON audit logs, and formats GitHub Pull Request review comments. Bifrost transforms schema rollouts from high-stress manual deployments into an automated, zero-downtime guarantee.
