IMBOB Architecture Storytellor
Modern software projects often span multiple languages, services, and interconnected modules. As a result, developers can struggle to understand the overall architecture, predict the effects of a code change, and keep documentation up to date. Tracing dependencies manually takes time and important relationships are easy to miss. Architecture Storyteller 2.0 addresses this problem through a VS Code and IBM Bob IDE extension that turns a repository into an interactive architecture model. It analyzes Python, TypeScript, JavaScript, and Go code, builds a shared representation of files and symbols, and displays relationships through an interactive architecture map. The Ripple-Agent feature helps developers understand the potential impact of a proposed change. It analyzes a function or code update, searches for direct and indirect callers, identifies affected files, and assigns a risk level based on the change's blast radius. It can also generate warnings and suggested compatibility patches for downstream code. When AI services are unavailable, deterministic local analysis provides a useful fallback. Developers interact with the project directly inside their IDE. They can explore dependencies, inspect symbols through hover information, view affected files with explorer badges, and run what-if analysis from a lightbulb action or context menu. The extension also provides documentation generation, dependency inspection, architecture maps, and publication-ready architecture dossiers in HTML or PDF format. The project is designed for software architects, developers working on large refactors, platform teams, and engineers who need to understand an unfamiliar codebase. It is especially useful for polyglot repositories where separate language-specific tools do not provide a complete architectural view. Its main innovation is the use of a shared model for analysis, visualization, impact assessment, and reporting. This helps keep the different views consistent instead of relying on separate tools that can produce conflicting results. Content-hash caching supports incremental updates, while security controls protect the local service from unsafe origins, oversized requests, path traversal, and shell injection. Architecture Storyteller makes architectural knowledge easier to explore and maintain. By combining static analysis, interactive visualization, change impact detection, and automated documentation in one developer workflow, it helps teams make safer changes and reduce the time spent understanding complex systems.
