AI Waste Assistant
Waste management is an everyday challenge, but many people are unsure how to correctly identify, separate, recycle, or dispose of common waste items. This can lead to recyclable materials being mixed with general waste and reusable items being unnecessarily discarded. WasteWise is an AI-powered waste recognition and guidance platform designed to help users make better waste-management decisions. Users can upload an image of a waste item, and the system analyzes it to identify the item and classify it into an appropriate waste category. Based on the identified item, WasteWise provides a simple explanation of the classification, practical disposal or recycling guidance, and possible reuse suggestions when applicable. The target users are students, households, educational institutions, and environmentally conscious individuals who want an easy way to make better decisions about everyday waste. The user interaction is simple: the user uploads an image, WasteWise analyzes it, and the application presents the detected item, waste category, recommended action, and possible reuse options. Users can also view their previous waste classifications and track patterns in the types of waste they identify over time. The creative aspect of WasteWise is that it goes beyond simple image classification. Instead of only telling users what an object is, the system connects recognition with an actionable recommendation: “What is this?”, “What category does it belong to?”, “What should I do with it?”, and “Can it be reused?” This creates a practical bridge between AI-based recognition and everyday environmental action. The project will use AI for image-based waste identification and intelligent generation of understandable disposal and reuse guidance. IBM Bob will support the development process by assisting with project planning, application development, debugging, testing, and documentation. IBM AI services will be evaluated and integrated where appropriate to support the intelligent components of the application. WasteWise aims to make responsible waste handling easier, more understandable, and more actionable for everyday users through an accessible AI-powered experience.
