CodeQadam: Repository Onboarding with IBM Bob
A new developer often spends hours finding the entry point, running a project, tracing how its modules fit together, and choosing a safe first task. Scattered or missing documentation makes that work slower and more error-prone. CodeQadam is a working prototype for developer onboarding. A Python CLI copies a local repository into a staging area and creates a manifest of its files. IBM Bob IDE analyzes that staged source and drafts five Markdown documents: a project overview, a setup guide, an architecture map with a Mermaid diagram, starter tasks, and a health report. The CLI then checks document structure and cited paths; a person reviews factual accuracy and verifies the setup before marking a stage complete. The target users are developers joining an unfamiliar project and maintainers who need a repeatable onboarding package. The demo uses a small Flask task API with deliberately planted documentation, configuration, and testing gaps. A developer prepares the sample with the CLI, uses Bob to generate each document, and checks the output. Example documents are included in the repository for a demo when Bob is unavailable. The distinctive part is the combination of source-grounded generation, explicit validation checks, and human review. CodeQadam is currently demonstrated on one sample repository. We have not measured a reduction in onboarding time or established that it works across arbitrary repositories.
