Smart Repository Onboarding Assistant
Smart Repository Onboarding Assistant The "Smart Repository Onboarding Assistant" is an AI-powered developer tool designed to help developers quickly understand, review, document, and improve unfamiliar software repositories. Built using "Streamlit, IBM Bob 2.0, and the Google Gemini API", it transforms a local code repository into an interactive, context-aware knowledge base that developers can explore through natural-language conversations. The Challenge Understanding an unfamiliar codebase can take hours or even days, especially when projects contain hundreds of files, complex dependencies, limited documentation, or unfamiliar coding patterns. Developers often need to manually explore folder structures, trace application logic, identify important modules, review code, and create documentation. This slows down onboarding and makes it difficult to understand a project before making changes. Our Solution The Smart Repository Onboarding Assistant allows developers to upload a ZIP archive or project folder directly through a Streamlit interface. The system analyzes the repository structure and source files, builds relevant project context, and uses the Google Gemini API to provide repository-specific assistance. Developers can ask questions about the codebase, understand how different components interact, generate documentation, and review code without manually searching through the entire project. Key Features The platform provides "repository ingestion and analysis", giving developers an overview of the project structure, technologies, important files, and major components. Its "AI-powered code Q&A" allows users to ask questions about authentication, database connections, application flow, functions, and relationships between different parts of the codebase. It also provides automatic README and documentation generation, producing structured Markdown documentation based on the analyzed repository. The "AI code review" feature can identify potential bugs, security concerns, inefficient implementations, maintainability issues, and missing error handling, while providing explanations and suggested improvements. IBM Bob 2.0 & Gemini Integration IBM Bob 2.0 supports the development and orchestration of the AI-powered developer workflow, while "Google Gemini" provides natural-language reasoning and code analysis. "Streamlit" provides the interactive interface through which developers communicate with their repository. Together, these technologies create a repository-aware developer assistant rather than a generic chatbot. What Makes It Different The project focuses on "repository-level understanding" instead of isolated code snippets. Developers can ask questions that require context from multiple files and components. The workflow is simple: (Understand → Explain → Review → Improve → Document) This makes the tool useful for developer onboarding, inherited projects, code reviews, and poorly documented repositories. Impact The assistant reduces the manual effort required to understand unfamiliar codebases and brings repository analysis, AI Q&A, code review, suggested improvements, and documentation into one workflow. Developers remain in control of final code changes, while AI provides the analysis and recommendations needed to work more efficiently. Future Scope Future versions can include GitHub/GitLab integration, visual architecture diagrams, pull-request reviews, dependency analysis, automated test generation, Git diff analysis, IDE integration, and team-level repository knowledge bases.
