Git Guard
GitGuard is an AI-powered VS Code extension designed to eliminate the anxiety and friction of Git operations for novice developers, student programmers, and early-career software engineers. The Problem Version control is a fundamental skill in software engineering, yet beginners consistently run into roadblocks when interacting with Git. Common hurdles—such as accidentally committing sensitive .env credentials, pushing binary files (.db, model weights), encountering missing upstream branches, or getting stuck on non-descriptive terminal errors—disrupt development flow. Standard Git terminal output is notoriously cryptic, often leading developers to abandon proper version control practices or commit security vulnerabilities directly into public repositories. The Solution & User Interaction GitGuard acts as an autonomous safety net embedded directly within the developer's editor. Instead of forcing users to struggle with command-line diagnostics, GitGuard replaces risky, manual workflows with a single "Safe Push" action integrated into VS Code’s editor title bar and Source Control panel. When a user clicks Safe Push: Agent 1 (Inspector) performs a zero-latency local pre-flight scan of staged files, git status, and git diff to identify hardcoded API keys, untracked database files, or missing Git configurations. If issues are detected—or if a git push fails—Agent 2 (Architect) intercepts the raw diagnostic output, synthesizes it using IBM Bob 2.0 intelligence, and presents a clear, beginner-friendly modal explaining what went wrong and how to fix it. Upon user confirmation, Agent 3 (Remediator) automatically executes deterministic repair steps (e.g., generating .gitignore rules, untracking sensitive binaries via git rm --cached, or configuring upstream tracking branches) before safely completing the push. Innovation & Unique Architecture GitGuard’s uniqueness lies in its hybrid 3-Agent Architecture, which balances instant performance with deep reasoning: Cost-Efficient & Deterministic First: Routine checks (regex key scanning, file size checks, .gitignore creation) run locally in zero milliseconds with zero token overhead. Selective AI Reasoning: IBM Bob 2.0 is invoked only when human-like reasoning or code refactoring is necessary—such as safely extracting hardcoded keys into process.env variables without breaking application logic. By bridging local terminal mechanics with context-aware AI agents, GitGuard empowers beginners to practice version control safely, prevents credential leaks at the source, and redefines the push workflow into a guided, zero-stress experience.
