FallGaurd
Introduction to the Project The FallGaurd repository on GitHub represents a critical health and safety application designed to automatically identify physical fall events and instantly alert emergency contacts. Falls are a leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries globally, particularly among the elderly demographic, patients recovering from complex surgeries, and individuals with motor disabilities or chronic health conditions. This open-source project aims to significantly mitigate the severe consequences of delayed medical assistance by providing a reliable, automated fall detection system utilizing modern mobile and hardware sensor technologies. Core Objective and Functionality At its core, this project serves as an active, life-saving digital companion by continuously monitoring a user’s bodily movements and orientation. When a sudden, high-impact fall occurs, the system's underlying algorithm processes the physical anomaly in real-time. To prevent frustrating false alarms—such as sitting down too quickly, jumping, exercising, or simply dropping the mobile device—the application intentionally incorporates a configurable grace period. During this critical window, a loud audible alarm and a visual countdown are triggered on the device's screen. If the user is unhurt, conscious, or the alarm was triggered accidentally by a sudden movement, they can quickly manually cancel the alert with a single tap. However, if the countdown expires without any user intervention, the system assumes the user is incapacitated and automatically dispatches an SOS text message containing the user’s exact geographical coordinates to pre-configured emergency contacts, family members, or local emergency services. Key Features Real-Time Sensor Monitoring: The application continuously runs an optimized background service that directly accesses the smartphone’s (or wearable's) built-in hardware sensors—specifically the accelerometer and gyroscope—to monitor sudden changes in velocity, bodily orientation, and impact forces. Automated SOS Alerts: Upon detecting a confirmed fall, the app seamlessly sends SMS alerts, drastically minimizing the crucial time gap between the accident and the arrival of medical help. GPS Location Integration: The automated alert messages are enriched with precise, real-time GPS tracking data. This allows caregivers and paramedics to locate the victim immediately, which is exceptionally crucial for outdoor falls or individuals suffering from conditions like dementia who might wander away from home. False Alarm Mitigation: The inclusion of an interactive cancellation prompt ensures that sudden but safe movements do not unnecessarily panic caregivers or waste valuable emergency response resources. Customizable Contact List: Users can easily add, edit, or prioritize multiple emergency contacts within the application's clean, intuitive, and highly accessible user interface. Technical Stack and Architecture Developed primarily for the modern mobile ecosystem, the project heavily relies on Sensor Manager APIs to fetch high-frequency raw data continuously. The core fall detection algorithm typically employs mathematical threshold-based heuristics. It specifically looks for a sudden, massive spike in acceleration (representing the physical impact of hitting the ground) followed immediately by a distinct period of inactivity (indicating the user is lying immobile on the ground). Furthermore, the application handles complex operating system permissions, such as background location access, direct SMS sending capabilities, and persistent background execution using Foreground Services to ensure battery optimizers do not prematurely kill the app while it runs in the background.
