RegTrace — Policy-Aware Development for Claude
Software teams increasingly rely on AI coding agents, but those agents do not automatically understand the privacy, security, governance, and legal rules that a company expects its software to follow. Those requirements usually live in separate documents, while implementation decisions happen inside the codebase. This creates a practical gap: an AI agent may build a feature that works technically while still conflicting with an internal policy. RegTrace closes that gap by making company policies part of the development loop itself. The user gives Claude a local repository path, a feature request, and the relevant policy documents in the same conversation. Claude first creates its own implementation plan. Before any code is written, RegTrace exposes the actual repository and a policy-review workflow through MCP, allowing Claude to review and revise the plan against both the codebase and the supplied policies. After implementation, RegTrace starts a separate review of the real source code. Claude can inspect concrete execution paths across functions, helpers, API calls, authorization checks, storage, logging, and external data transfers. If a conflict is supported by the supplied policy, Claude can apply the smallest correction through RegTrace and then perform a fresh review of the resulting code. The target users are software developers, engineering teams, security teams, and organizations using AI coding assistants in environments where internal rules matter. Interaction is intentionally simple: attach the policy documents, point Claude at the local project, describe the feature, and ask it to use the RegTrace workflow. What makes RegTrace different is that it does not try to replace the coding agent or build a second AI application. Claude remains the reasoning and coding agent. RegTrace acts as a local policy-aware workflow layer that connects the organization’s rules with the repository at the moments where engineering decisions are made: before coding and after coding. The system is local-first, exposes only two primary MCP tools, avoids executing arbitrary repository code for inspection, blocks common secret files, and restricts writes to the selected repository. RegTrace does not claim universal legal compliance. Its review is explicitly bounded by the policy documents supplied by the user and the code paths inspected. The goal is practical, efficient policy-aware software engineering: catch problems earlier, reduce rework, and make organizational requirements visible to the AI agent while software is actually being built.
