RepoPilot — Understand Any GitHub Repository Understanding an unfamiliar codebase is one of the most time-consuming challenges developers face. Whether joining an open-source project, reviewing a teammate's work, or exploring a new technology, developers often spend hours navigating directories, identifying important files, tracing dependencies, and understanding how components interact. Large repositories make this process even more difficult. RepoPilot is an AI-powered repository intelligence platform designed to make understanding GitHub projects faster, easier, and more visual. Users simply paste a public GitHub repository URL and choose one of three analysis modes. Overview Mode-provides a concise explanation of the project, its purpose, principal technologies, and major components. RepoPilot also retrieves verified GitHub metadata, programming-language statistics, and the repository's actual directory structure. Architecture Mode-analyzes relevant source files and generates a visual architecture diagram. Instead of forcing developers to read lengthy technical explanations, RepoPilot organizes important files into meaningful components and illustrates their relationships. Users can explore the architecture and download a PDF report. Ask RepoPilot-allows developers to ask specific questions about a repository. The AI analyzes actual source code, references relevant files, and provides focused explanations. Users can continue asking follow-up questions without restarting the entire analysis. Unlike tools that primarily summarize README files, RepoPilot retrieves actual source files from GitHub. Its intelligent retrieval system identifies relevant files while respecting resource limits. All analysis is tied to a specific Git commit, ensuring that explanations and file references correspond to the same repository revision. RepoPilot combines this source-grounded analysis with real-time response streaming, interactive conversations, a GitHub-inspired repository explorer, and browser-local conversation history. Our target users include software engineers, students, open-source contributors, technical team leads, and developers onboarding onto unfamiliar projects. What distinguishes RepoPilot is its combination of repository intelligence, visual architecture generation, evidence-based AI conversations, and an interchangeable AI provider system within a single developer workspace. The platform currently supports IBM Bob Shell for local AI-powered repository analysis and Anthropic Claude for the deployed web application. Its modular architecture separates GitHub retrieval, repository context preparation, AI inference, and frontend presentation. Our vision is to transform the experience of exploring unfamiliar codebases: from manually navigating hundreds of files to understanding a project's structure and asking meaningful technical questions within minutes.
