Modern software projects rely on many independent checks before release: security scanning, test execution, API validation, dependency analysis, Docker configuration, environment checks, and Git state inspection. These checks are often distributed across different tools and require developers to manually interpret their results before deciding whether an application is safe and ready to release. BobShip addresses this problem by turning release readiness into a single, orchestrated workflow powered by IBM Bob. A developer can ask Bob to analyze a repository for release readiness. Bob uses the release-engineer workflow to orchestrate specialized Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools that inspect the project across multiple engineering dimensions, including secrets, tests, APIs, dependencies, Docker configuration, environment configuration, and Git state. The results from these checks are aggregated into a consistent set of engineering findings. A lightweight integration adapter converts the MCP findings into the Release Engine's normalized format without coupling the engine to individual MCP implementations. The Release Engine then deterministically classifies findings by severity and calculates a release-readiness score using defined scoring rules. The result is one of three clear outcomes: READY, READY WITH WARNINGS, NOT READY, or BLOCKED depending on the severity and number of findings. Instead of simply reporting that something is wrong, BobShip provides actionable evidence including the finding category, severity, affected file and line when available, explanation, and remediation guidance. It also generates a persistent Markdown release-readiness report that can be used as an auditable release artifact. The system is designed around clear responsibility separation: IBM Bob handles orchestration, MCP provides repository inspection capabilities, and the Release Engine performs deterministic normalization, scoring, and reporting. This makes the workflow transparent, testable, and extensible rather than relying on an opaque AI-generated release decision. The target users are developers, engineering teams, DevOps teams, and technical leads who need a fast and explainable way to determine whether a project is ready for deployment. BobShip reduces manual verification effort while giving teams a single, evidence-backed answer to a critical question: “Can we safely release this application?”
