Onboarding Quest
Problem Joining an unfamiliar software project can be overwhelming, especially for junior developers and engineers moving between teams. New developers often have to jump between README files, documentation, source code and tests while trying to understand how everything connects. When documentation is incomplete or the codebase is unfamiliar, they often depend on experienced teammates to explain the system or validate their understanding. This makes onboarding time-consuming for both the new developer and the team supporting them. More importantly, reading documentation does not necessarily mean the developer can apply what they learned when investigating a bug or making a change. Solution Onboarding Quest turns an unfamiliar software repository into an interactive developer onboarding journey. A developer provides a repository, and Onboarding Quest analyzes its structure, documentation, source code and dependencies to build a structured understanding of the project. Instead of simply presenting an AI-generated summary, the platform turns that understanding into progressive challenges. The developer moves through a journey: Explore the Codebase → Understand the Architecture → Prove Your Knowledge → Investigate a Problem → Predict a Change → First Contribution Developers can explore important components and files, answer repository-specific knowledge questions, investigate realistic scenarios, predict the impact of code changes and finally explain how they would approach a real development task. The system tracks performance and identifies knowledge gaps so onboarding can become more targeted rather than following the same static checklist for everyone. Target Users The primary users are software developers joining an unfamiliar codebase, particularly junior developers, interns and engineers moving between teams. Engineering teams and technical leads can also use the platform to make onboarding more structured and reduce repetitive explanations. How It Works 1. The developer uploads or selects a repository. 2. Onboarding Quest extracts relevant repository context. 3. AI analyzes the project structure, technologies, components, dependencies, documentation and key concepts. 4. The platform converts this understanding into an interactive onboarding journey. 5. The developer completes increasingly practical challenges. 6. Their responses reveal knowledge gaps and guide the next learning activity. 7. The journey ends with a simulated first contribution task and a contribution-readiness summary. What Makes It Unique Onboarding Quest is designed around active learning rather than passive documentation. It does not simply answer "What does this code do?" It asks the developer to demonstrate that they understand the codebase. The system is also repository-agnostic. The sample repository used for demonstration is only a test case; the underlying concept is an engine that can transform different unfamiliar codebases into their own onboarding journeys. This creates a bridge between onboarding and actual development work: the goal is not merely to finish reading documentation, but to reach the point where a developer can reason about the codebase and approach their first contribution.
