Team Repository Assistant for Codebase Exploration
Problem Statement Software development velocity is severely impacted by knowledge fragmentation and static documentation. Industry research reveals that 61% of developers lose over 30 minutes every day searching for answers or waiting for help, while 69% lose at least eight hours per week to workplace inefficiencies and documentation gaps. Senior engineers and managers also bear a heavy burden, with 61% spending over 30 minutes daily answering context questions for colleagues. As repositories evolve across thousands of files, dependencies, and commits, traditional documentation quickly becomes outdated, creating a dangerous gap between written specs and actual code behavior. Generic AI coding assistants fail to solve this: 46% of developers distrust generic AI tools because their answers rely on general pre-training data rather than the specific codebase, leading to "almost right" solutions in 66% of cases. Proposed Solution TRACiE (Codebase-Aware AI Developer Onboarding Assistant) bridges this gap by connecting directly to team repositories via GitHub/GitLab APIs and push webhooks. Using a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline powered by IBM watsonx.ai, TRACiE continuously parses source code AST hierarchies, Git commit histories, dependency graphs, and pull requests to build a live, context-aware understanding of the project. Target Users & Interaction: Designed for junior developers onboarding onto unfamiliar systems, senior engineers navigating legacy modules, and DevOps teams analyzing service dependencies. Users interact with TRACiE through a natural language chat interface. Instead of returning generic prose, TRACiE streams structured JSON payloads containing mandatory source file and line-range citations. Creative & Unique Approach: What makes TRACiE uniquely innovative is its Dynamic UI Rendering Engine, built to convert structured LLM JSON outputs into over 45 custom, interactive visual widgets via a type-dispatch mechanism. Instead of long text blocks, TRACiE dynamically renders: • Architecture & Diagrams: Interactive Mermaid.js flowcharts, sequence diagrams, ER schemas, and dependency trees. • Code Walkthroughs: Syntax-highlighted Prism.js code diffs and step-by-step file references. • Interactive Learning Modes: Auto-generated codebase-specific quizzes, flashcards, step-by-step onboarding paths, and text-to-speech audio briefings. • Composite Dashboards: Staggered multi-widget views for broad architectural queries. Additionally, TRACiE features continuous synchronization: when code changes are pushed, the system evaluates documentation drift and automatically generates markdown pull requests for maintainer review. Impact & Efficiency: TRACiE replaces disjointed searches across code, stale docs, and senior developer interruptions with a single, continuously updated, multi-modal interface. By grounding every response in live implementation and rendering answers visually, TRACiE cuts developer knowledge-location time by more than 50%, protects senior developer productivity, and turns complex codebases into interactive learning environments.
