Bobtention : A Human Attention Routing
The Problem Agentic AI assistants like IBM Bob have transformed software development by inspecting repositories, modifying code, running tests, and debugging autonomously. However, developers currently face a frustrating dilemma: 1. Constant Supervision ("Babysitting"): Staring at the terminal/chat watching every file read and tool invocation destroys the productivity promise of autonomous coding. 2. Blind Autonomy ("Crossing Fingers"): Stepping away risks returning to find Bob caught in an ineffective test failure loop, drifting outside the requested task, thrashing across unrelated directories, or touching sensitive files (e.g., credentials, migration schemas, or destructive scripts). Most agent tooling asks: "What more can the agent do?" The missing capability is attention management: "When does the developer actually need to intervene?" The Solution: Bobtention Bobtention is an intelligent human-attention router built specifically for IBM Bob. Operating as a lightweight, zero-cloud runtime extension using Bob's native hook lifecycle (UserPromptSubmit, PreToolUse, PostToolUse, Stop), Bobtention observes the trajectory of a coding session and routes attention across an Allow / Watch / Block model: - ALLOW: Normal progression aligned with the prompt. Bob continues completely uninterrupted. - WATCH: Minor or exploratory deviation. Logged quietly with heightened telemetry, zero developer interruption. - BLOCK: Critical threshold crossed. Bob is paused before executing the tool, alerting the developer with clear context. How Users Interact With It Bobtention stays invisible until needed. A developer prompts Bob as usual. Behind the scenes, Bobtention captures the original intent and inspects ongoing actions. If Bob drifts off-scope, enters a repeated failure loop, or attempts a destructive action, Bobtention halts tool execution via exit codes and outputs an actionable, human-readable diagnostic to stderr: - The original task intent vs. current target. - The specific attention signals triggered (e.g., TASK_DRIFT, REPEATED_FAILURE, HIGH_IMPACT_CHANGE). - The exact reasoning behind the pause. If the action was intentional, the developer simply runs `npx bobtention override` from the terminal to immediately unblock Bob and resume work. Why It Is Unique and Creative Rather than building another chatbot, wrapper UI, or competing LLM agent, Bobtention introduces Attention Routing to developer workflows. Its key innovations include: - Zero Context Pollution & True Invisibility: The absence of interruptions is a core feature. Developers regain flow-state focus while Bob works. - Multi-Question Guardrail Engine: Integrates with Laya/JEV runtime for semantic evaluation of session state (task alignment, scope justification, thrashing vs. legitimate exploration) without sending raw proprietary code. - Fail-Open Resilience: Complete internal isolation ensuring internal errors never block Bob unexpectedly. By bridging the gap between micromanagement and uncontrolled autonomy, Bobtention makes autonomous coding with IBM Bob trustworthy, safe, and truly hands-off.
