Agent Holmes — Autonomous AI Software Investigator

Software debugging consumes over 50% of developer time and costs the global economy hundreds of billions annually. Traditional debugging tools are fragmented: static linters produce noisy false positives without understanding context; logging engines capture symptoms without pinpointing root causes; and generic LLMs frequently hallucinate speculative, untested code that fails to compile or introduces regressions. Developers are left manually piecing together stack traces, Git blame logs, and code references. Agent Holmes fundamentally transforms this paradigm by introducing an evidence-driven, forensic investigation pipeline. Modeled after a detective, Holmes operates on a core tenet: "Every bug leaves evidence." When a developer or QA engineer inputs a repository and an issue description, Holmes initiates an autonomous four-stage investigation: INVESTIGATE → IDENTIFY → FIX → VERIFY. Target users include software engineers, DevOps leads, and QA specialists who need to diagnose elusive, multi-layer regressions (such as session persistence failures, authentication leaks, or race conditions). Rather than conversing with a passive chatbot, users interact with a real-time Detective Cockpit. The UI streams forensic telemetry, renders an interactive Detective Evidence Board connecting clues to hypotheses, and displays a unified git diff viewer alongside verified test results. What makes Agent Holmes truly unique is its evidentiary rigor. Holmes will never claim an issue is resolved without automated empirical proof: 1. Forensic Discovery: Holmes navigates repository structures, running AST-aware ripgrep queries and Git history inspections through sandboxed tooling. 2. Clue Gathering: Every deduction must be anchored to concrete line-level code artifacts with confidence scores. 3. Surgical Patch Synthesis: Holmes formulates candidate hypotheses and synthesizes a minimal unified diff addressing the root cause without unneeded refactoring. 4. Deterministic Sandbox Verification: The patch is applied inside an isolated execution environment where automated test suites (e.g., pytest, npm test) are executed. If tests pass, Holmes updates the dossier to "CASE SOLVED" and exports a ready-to-merge Git PR. By replacing blind LLM code generation with an auditable forensic loop grounded in passing tests, Agent Holmes delivers verifiable engineering trust that developers can merge with complete confidence.
