Space Debris Tracker

Project Overview: Real-Time Orbital Telemetry Dashboard Introduction: The Congestion of Low Earth Orbit The rapid commercialization of space has led to an exponential increase in the number of objects launched into Low Earth Orbit (LEO). From sprawling mega-constellations of telecommunication satellites to critical human-crewed infrastructure like the International Space Station (ISS), and an ever-growing, hazardous cloud of space debris, LEO is becoming critically congested. Space Situational Awareness (SSA) is no longer a niche concern for national space agencies; it is a vital necessity for the future of global communications, scientific exploration, and orbital safety. To address this complex global challenge for the IBM bob 2.0 Hackathon, we have developed a comprehensive, real-time Orbital Telemetry Dashboard. This platform democratizes access to complex astrodynamics data, transforming raw telemetry into highly intuitive, interactive visual insights accessible directly from a web browser. Core Concept & SGP4 Propagation At its core, the project is a sophisticated, highly performant web application built on the robust Next.js framework. It is designed to track, predict, and visualize the exact positions of thousands of active satellites, space stations, and tracked orbital debris in real time. Unlike static databases that simply list coordinates, our dashboard breathes life into space data by employing the SGP4 (Simplified General Perturbations No. 4) mathematical model. By ingesting standard Two-Line Element (TLE) sets from public space-track databases, the application calculates precise orbital mechanics dynamically on the client side. This means users witness the smooth, continuous motion of objects across their screens as they orbit the Earth, completely eliminating the latency and heavy network load associated with constant server polling. Dual-Mode Visualization Engine Understanding orbital paths requires moving beyond raw numbers. To cater to different analytical and educational needs, the dashboard features a powerful dual-mode visualization engine: Interactive 3D Globe: Powered by WebGL, this mode provides a true spatial understanding of the Earth's orbit. Users can pan, zoom, and rotate a highly detailed 3D Earth, observing the three-dimensional "shell" of objects surrounding our planet. This view vividly illustrates the altitude differences between various satellite constellations and highlights the terrifying density of the space debris environment, bringing the reality of the Kessler Syndrome into sharp focus. Dynamic 2D Map View: For traditional geographic tracking, the 2D map projects satellite ground tracks (the path the satellite sweeps over the Earth's surface). This is an essential tool for determining overhead passes, predicting localized communication windows, and understanding terrestrial coverage for specific satellite networks. Technical Architecture & Performance Building a dashboard capable of animating thousands of fast-moving data points required a meticulously optimized tech stack. Next.js serves as the backbone, chosen for its exceptional server-side rendering capabilities, SEO optimization, and seamless API route integration. The frontend leverages advanced React state management and Web Workers to offload the heavy mathematical SGP4 calculations from the main UI thread. This architectural decision ensures the dashboard remains buttery smooth and highly responsive, even when rendering dense debris fields. The platform is designed to be cloud-native and horizontally scalable, making it a perfect fit for deployment on modern enterprise cloud infrastructures (such as IBM Cloud), capable of effortlessly ingesting and processing massive streams of updated TLE data daily.
