Chore fairness

Chore Fairness — Problem & Solution Statement The Problem Shared living is rewarding — until it isn't. One of the most persistent sources of friction between housemates, partners, or roommates is the perception that chores are distributed unevenly. The person who vacuums, does laundry, and scrubs the bathroom rarely gets credit for the cumulative effort, while the person who wipes a counter once feels equally contributive. Traditional solutions — chore wheels, shared spreadsheets, or group chats — are either too rigid, too cumbersome, or too easy to ignore. The result is passive frustration, guilt-tripping, or outright conflict, not because people are selfish, but because there's no shared, objective record of who did what. The Solution Chore Fairness is a lightweight, mobile-friendly web app that gives two people a shared, real-time view of household effort — without spreadsheets, arguments, or shame. The core idea is simple: tap a chore, and it's logged. The app does the math. What makes it smarter than a simple checklist is effort weighting. Not all chores are equal — a deep bathroom clean (weight 5) takes far more out of you than wiping the counters (weight 1). Chore Fairness reflects that reality by assigning each task a weight from 1 to 5, so the split percentage is always a fair representation of actual effort, not just task count. Target Users The app is designed for two-person households — roommates, couples, or any pair sharing domestic responsibilities. It requires no account creation and no complex setup. Either person opens the app, taps their name, logs what they did, and the dashboard updates instantly. How They Interact With It The experience is three screens deep: Landing — choose who you are ("You" or your housemate) with a single tap. Log — a grid of chore chips; tap one to log it instantly. The chip highlights immediately (optimistic UI), and the record is saved to the backend in the background. Dashboard — a live split bar shows the current week's effort percentage for each person, a 7-day Bézier trend chart visualises how the balance has shifted, and a gentle nudge message appears when the split tips beyond a threshold — encouraging balance without blaming anyone. What Makes It Creative and Unique Most chore apps are to-do lists in disguise — they track what needs doing, not what was done. Chore Fairness flips that model: it's a contribution ledger, not a task manager. The effort-weighted scoring, the live trend chart, and the tone-aware nudge system (gentle encouragement, never accusatory) make it feel less like a chore tracker and more like a shared scorecard both people actually want to check. Built with vanilla JS, Vite, and Appwrite Cloud — no heavy framework, no over-engineering — the app is fast, installable as a PWA, and trivially self-hostable. In short: Chore Fairness turns an invisible, emotionally loaded problem into a transparent, low-friction shared record — so the conversation shifts from "you never do anything" to "looks like it's your turn."
