Onboarding new users into a codebase requires significant effort among existing developers and the new user. The complexity that is presented is seen on multiple layers and that presents a time-consuming process of trial and error that new developers must be integrated into smaller isolated parts of the code repository before being handed larger tasks. The idea of Bob the Onboarder is to more quick assimilate the user by being able to visualize the repository on levels and understand what portions of the code impacts what other areas.
