CodeCompass — AI-Powered Developer Onboarding

CodeCompass is an AI-powered developer onboarding and codebase intelligence platform designed to help developers understand unfamiliar software projects faster. Joining an existing project can require developers to explore hundreds of files, understand unfamiliar architecture, trace dependencies, discover how features work, and determine where they can safely begin contributing. This can make the transition from joining a project to making a meaningful contribution difficult. CodeCompass addresses this by transforming a GitHub repository into an interactive developer learning experience. It analyzes repository files, languages, modules, dependencies, and architectural relationships, then presents the resulting architecture visually so developers can build a mental model of the system. The platform includes an AI Codebase Assistant powered by IBM watsonx.ai and IBM Granite. Instead of relying only on generic AI knowledge, CodeCompass retrieves relevant repository context and provides grounded explanations about architecture, features, code, request flows, and potential change impact. Developers can ask questions in natural language and receive beginner-friendly explanations with relevant source references. CodeCompass also provides role-specific onboarding paths for Frontend, Backend, Full Stack, and QA developers, with learning steps and progress tracking. Starter Tasks then help developers identify smaller, lower-risk opportunities for their first contribution. The target users are developers joining existing projects, developers taking over unfamiliar codebases, and teams looking to improve developer onboarding. The core workflow is: Analyze → Understand → Learn → Assess Impact → Start Contributing. CodeCompass combines repository intelligence, architecture visualization, grounded AI assistance, guided onboarding, and starter-task discovery into one workflow designed to shorten the journey from unfamiliarity to meaningful contribution.
