Problem Statement Code review and developer onboarding are two of the most time-consuming activities in software development. When a developer encounters unfamiliar code — whether during a review, a handover, or their first days on a new project — they must manually read each line, infer the intent, identify required libraries, and search for potential bugs. This process is slow, error-prone, and often requires interrupting colleagues to ask for context. Target Users Bob Code Editor is designed for three main audiences: - Junior developers who are learning to read and understand code written by others. - Developers joining a new project who need to quickly grasp an unfamiliar codebase. - Tech leads and reviewers who want to speed up code review and catch issues before they reach production. Solution Bob Code Editor is a lightweight desktop code editor built with Electron that integrates IBM Bob 2.0 directly into the coding workflow. The user writes or pastes Python code, clicks "Analyze with Bob", and within seconds the editor displays four complementary outputs: 1. Inline comments — short, clear comments (maximum 6 words) inserted directly next to each line of code, keeping the code readable. 2. Line-by-line explanations — detailed pedagogical explanations for each line, displayed in the Mirror panel on the right. 3. Library detection — the list of libraries required by the code, displayed in the Libraries panel. 4. Error detection and corrections — bugs, syntax errors, and logical issues detected by Bob, along with the exact code correction, displayed in the Errors panel. How users interact with it The user writes or pastes Python code into the main editor panel, then clicks the "Analyze with Bob" button. Within seconds, the four panels on the right fill with Bob's analysis. The user can then run the code in the integrated terminal (for example "python script.py") to confirm that the error Bob predicted is real, and that Bob's correction fixes it. This creates a complete feedback loop: write code, analyze it, run it, understand the error, fix it, learn from it. What makes it creative and unique Unlike typical AI coding assistants that work inside an existing IDE, Bob Code Editor is a self-contained editor designed specifically around Bob. The integration uses Bob Shell in headless JSON mode, with a strict prompt that guarantees a structured response (four sections), which is then parsed and displayed in dedicated panels. The editor also automatically removes outdated Bob comments when the underlying code changes, ensuring the analysis always stays accurate. Impact Bob Code Editor reduces what would take 10–15 minutes of manual reading down to a few seconds. It makes code review faster, developer onboarding smoother, and error detection more reliable. Instead of reading code line by line, the developer can focus on understanding intent and making decisions.
