BugTrace: Idempotency Guards for Inventory Drift

Created by team Team SoniX on September 26, 2026

Problem: In modern e-commerce architectures, flaky network connections and client-side retries frequently trigger duplicate requests. When processing return transactions (such as POST /api/return for transaction TXN-9981), non-idempotent server-side handlers mutate state on every incoming attempt. This causes phantom inventory increments—driving stock counts up multiple times for a single physical book return and leading to severe inventory drift. Solution & Target Users: BugTrace is an enterprise-grade idempotency guard engineered for backend developers, API maintainers, and system architects. When a return request enters the system, our service executes a check-before-mutate pattern against an internal processed_transactions registry. If the transaction ID is new, stock is safely incremented and logged. If a duplicate retry arrives within seconds, the service short-circuits execution and returns status: ignored, leaving the inventory state untouched. Interaction & Workflow: Developers integrate BugTrace directly into their API middleware or service layer. When end-users or automated retry mechanisms trigger duplicate API calls, the system automatically screens the transaction header/payload against processed records before attempting any database or inventory mutation. Creativity & Efficiency: Rather than relying on resource-heavy database locks or complex distributed locking mechanisms, BugTrace delivers a lightweight, zero-overhead verification pattern that completely mitigates retry-induced drift. Our solution was verified using automated pytest suites to guarantee 100% duplicate retry protection and maintain strict state integrity under network instability.
