The Problem: When code in a real project looks fragile, over-engineered, or just confusing, the developer who understood why it's that way has often already moved on. Reconstructing that history manually means digging through commit messages, old diffs, and documentation that may or may not still be accurate, a slow, easy-to-skip step that most developers only do when forced to, usually right before making things worse. The Solution: Commit Detective points IBM Bob 2.0 at a codebase's real git history and has it independently investigate and reconstruct the causal story behind a specific area of concern, what was built, what broke, why it broke, and how it was resolved using only the actual commits and diffs, not assumptions. Only after completing its own investigation does Bob cross-check its findings against any existing project documentation, reporting both where the two agree and where the documentation falls short.
